Synopsis

This contemporary unit is designed to focus on key issues arising in the global tourism industry such as poverty alleviation through tourism and the growth of independent travel. The unit is presented via a number of key industry seminars and a proposed field work study tour to destinations including Sydney and far North Queensland.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit, students will have developed:

1. an understanding of key problems and issues in the current and future development of the global tourism industry
2. a developed capacity to undertake original research on an area of their particular interest.
3. enhanced written and oral communication skills suitable for progress in the tourism profession.
4. an understanding of key issues facing the future development of the industry.
5. an understanding of the principles and practices of e-tourism.

Assessment

Research paper (4600) : 50%
Group fieldwork assignment (2000 each) : 20%
Examination (2 hours) : 20%
Class Contribution (400 ) : 10%

Contact hours

7 x 3 hour lectures, 2 x 2 hour student presentation seminars and a 7 day intensive study tour with industry seminars and field work
