Synopsis

This unit is designed to give students the ability to use financial information in managing a wine, food or beverage enterprise. Topics covered include: cash flow analysis, using financial information for investment decision making, understanding and interpreting financial statements, measures of profitability and financial stability, cost behaviour and cost volume relationships, budgeting and business planning and control and accounting for management operations.

Objectives

The learning goals associated with this unit are to:

• develop abilities to use financial information in managing a wine, food or beverage enterprise
• acquire knowledge in understanding, interpreting and analysing financial statements
• acquire an understanding of cost behaviour and cost volume relationships, budgeting and business planning and control and accounting for management operations
• develop academic skills by setting an assignment that requires access an electronic database and hard copy references
• develop an ability to work independently and to lead and participate in teams from diverse cultural and social backgrounds by setting both independent and group tutorial assignments.

Assessment

Minor assignments: 20%
Major assignment (3000 words): 30%
Examination (2 hours): 50%
