Course description

This double award course allows students to study the Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing) from Chisholm TAFE in conjunction with the Bachelor of Communication degree from Monash University. Students receive both of these awards from the respective institutions upon completion of the program.

Course objectives

The course provides major studies in the theory, practice, technology and research techniques of mass communications together with studies at Chisholm TAFE that provide students with the theoretical base and the practical skills in a variety of writing, editing and production tasks.

Course structure

Students must complete 108 points in the Bachelor of Communication component and 10 modules in the Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing) component.

Areas of study

Arts sequences offered at Berwick include behavioural studies, Indonesian, international studies, journalism, psychology and visual culture. Alternatively, students select a sequence of arts units taught at one of the other campuses of the university. Students who opt for this alternative should note that it will involve travelling to another campus to attend lectures, and close attention will need to be paid to the lecture timetable.

Course requirements

Communication component

(a) a major in communications (48 points)

(b) a first-year sequence in film and television studies; FTV1010 (Contemporary television studies) and FTV1050 (Contemporary film studies)

(c) a minor in an arts discipline (24 points)

(d) additional arts studies – electives (12 points).

Professional writing and editing component

Students must complete 18 modules from Chisholm TAFE offerings*:
