Course description

This course prepares graduates with the necessary skills, knowledge and value base for competent community and social welfare practice in a wide range of settings. Emphasis is placed on the practical and vocational elements of professional practice. On completion, students may apply to upgrade to the Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare or the related double degrees.

Course structure

Course requirements

A candidate for the diploma must complete the following requirements to a total of 96 points:

(a) a prescribed sequence in social and community welfare (66 points):

  • SCW1302 Governing inequality: foundations of social welfare provision
  • SCW1303 Foundations of interpersonal practice
  • SCW1304 Communication and counselling skills
  • SCW1305 Teams, groups and community networks
  • SCW2303 Case management theory and practice
  • SCW2304 Community development
  • SCW2306 Field education and practice
  • SCW2307 advanced human services organizational practice.
  • SCW2311 Social issues and personal values
  • SCW2312 Welfare law, rights and ethics

(b) three supporting units (18 points) chosen from:

  • PSS1711 Exploring human behaviour*
  • PSS1712 Behaviour across the lifespan*
  • SCY1801 Sociological reflections on everyday life
  • SCY1802 Global sociology

(c) DFS1611 Understanding university learning, or a first-year elective (6 points)

(d) a further 6 points in arts at second-year level.

    * The psychological studies units provide an introduction to understanding our behaviour, which is particularly tailored to those students intending to proceed in the social and community field. Students may choose to replace the psychological studies units with psychology units PSY1011 Psychology 1A and PSY1022 Psychology 1B.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.
