Course description

In addition to learning practical skills, students will be exposed to the historical, creative, technical and cultural aspects of music. Students complete a major in either music performance or composition as well as a second major in composition (if not primary major) or musicology/ethnomusicology. In addition to specialised studies in music, students can undertake a small amount of studies from the humanities and social science disciplines.

The course provides students with a comprehensive and balanced education appropriate for careers in all aspects of the music industry.

Course requirements

Students must complete a major in performance or composition and a minor in performance and a major in one other stream, ie composition, musicology or ethnomusicology.

Performance major

Students complete the following:

(a) a performance major (54 points)

(b) a second music major in one of composition or musicology/ethnomusicology (54 points)

(d) another first-year-level sequence (12 points)

(e) a minimum of 36 points at third-year level.

Composition major

Students complete the following:

(a) a composition major (54 points)

(b) a combined major sequence in composition and musicology (54 points)

(d) another first-year-level sequence (12 points)

(e) a minimum of 36 points at third-year level.

Note that no more than 10 units (60 points) are to be completed at a first-year level. Students have a maximum of eight years to complete this course.
