Course description

This course, offered by the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, provides a broad framework from which to manage clinical health care systems by attention to human resource, financial, information, medico-legal, political, cultural, economic, ethical, industrial, technological and psychosocial issues. This course articulates with the Master of Health Services Management or can lead to the Master of Public Health. Students are required to complete compulsory block requirements each semester.

Course objectives

On completion of the course students should be able to: 1. demonstrate a detailed understanding of the principles of financial, resource and information management in clinical health care systems; 2. analyse the economic, political cultural, ethical, industrial, technological and psycho-social determinants of clinical health care systems and their relationship to health policy initiatives; 3. demonstrate an understanding of the medico-legal issues in clinical health services management; 4. demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of health care systems; 5. demonstrate an understanding of, and skills in, health care quality assurance and quality improvement; 6. demonstrate an understanding of the factors which influence the design and implementation of health programs; 7. demonstrate the epidemiological and statistical skills necessary for the understanding of evidence based medicine, quality improvement and health program evaluations; 8. demonstrate a familiarity with research initiatives in clinical health policy and clinical health policy/clinical health services planning; 9. demonstrate skills in working in a team and team leadership; and 10. demonstrate skills in literature review, report writing, oral presentations, verbal and visual communications and the basic use of computers.

Students are required to complete six core units and two electives.

Assessment

Assessment includes web-based tasks, written assignments, examinations, and individual and group presentations.
