Master of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)

Course description

This course is designed to meet the needs of: teachers who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in teaching English as a second or foreign language; English language teachers needing an accredited qualification; educators who wish to use this pathway as a basis for detailed research in English language teaching and learning; and teachers who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in teaching students from language and cultural backgrounds other than English ones.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course applicants must hold either:

  • an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
  • an approved four-year bachelors degree, or
  • qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Applicants must also be experienced teachers who hold a teaching qualification recognised in Australia.

English language requirements

Applicants who are not native speakers of English will be required to demonstrate substantial competence in written and spoken English before admission. These requirements are:

(i) education in full English medium in an English-speaking country, or

(ii) IELTS – 7.0 global (no score below 6); TOEFL – 600 with TWE of 5; computer-based TOEFL – 250.

Credit for prior studies

Teachers who have taught ESOL for three years full-time or longer may document 22 days of lessons in their own classrooms in lieu of undertaking an externally supervised teaching fieldwork and EDF6238. Teachers who have gained the Royal Society of Arts Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults (RSACTEFLA) may gain an exemption of five days from the teaching fieldwork.

Course structure

Students are required to successfully complete 72 points, comprising one of the following three options:

  • six units – option one
  • five units plus EDF6010/20 Professional project (8000 words) – option two
  • four units plus a research thesis (16,000 words) – option three.

Specialist electives

  • EDF6233 Theory and practice of TESOL (12 points)
  • EDF6234 Curriculum design and evaluation in languages education (12 points), or EDF6210 Language testing and assessment (12 points), or EDF6201 Theory and principles of bilingual/immersion education (12 points)
  • EDF6238 Advanced practicum in language teaching: TESOL (12 points)

General elective unit

Select one general elective unit (12 points)

Option 2

Research core unit

An appropriate 12-point research unit will be selected from the faculty suite of research methodology units.

  • EDF6233 Theory and practice of TESOL (12 points)
  • EDF6238 Advanced practicum in language teaching: TESOL (12 points)

Research thesis

  • EDF6031 and EDF6032 Masters thesis part 1 and part 2 (16,000 words) (totalling 24 points)

General elective units

Any 12-point units selected from the units offered within the education postgraduate coursework studies programs.

Note that general electives usually do not need the course coordinator’s approval, unless there are exceptional circumstances (ie if the student wishes to enrol in a unit from another faculty).

  • EDF6007 Qualitative approaches to research (12 points)

  • EDF6013 Specific focus in research B (6 points)

Research thesis

The research core unit is a corequisite for the research thesis. It may be taken concurrently with the research thesis or completed prior to the commencement of the research thesis.
