Units indexed by faculty Monash Asia InstituteOffered by the Monash Asia Institute Telephone: +61 3 9905 5481 Email: monash.asia.institute@adm.monash.edu.au The Monash Asia Institute (MAI) provides postgraduate students with a unique opportunity of undertaking doctoral and masters theses in cross-disciplinary areas. The MAI is able to do this due to its close relationship to the ten faculties of the university across all its campuses in Australia and overseas. Joint supervision across the disciplines allows students to maximise their access to the academic specialists. The MAI has expertise in the general field of Asian studies but, in particular, Asian studies which focus on the following research areas: mass poverty; information technology; sustainable development; corporate responsibility; food, health and nutrition; urbanisation and rural-urban migration; cultural and political movements; global governance and regional security. The MAI has six research centres, run by directors who are Asia experts with a long track record of research and fieldwork in China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Asia–Europe–US relations. Through its research programs and database, the MAI provides scholars with links to a wide range of experts in the region, including links to governments, companies, universities and think-tanks. The MAI runs a series of research seminars and conferences to promote the research and publishing activities of its postgraduates, and has a postgraduate student room with computer, internet and other facilities needed for research. Resources are also provided for fieldwork in Asia. The MAI attracts students from across the region, including staff from universities in Asia. As a result, the MAI is continuously expanding its networks in the region with immediate benefit to its postgraduates.
