Course description

Graduate Diploma of English as an International Language is an interdisciplinary course designed for candidates who are interested in exploring the issues that are associated with the role of English as an international language. The course covers issues that relate to the socio-cultural, conceptual, and ideological considerations that relate to the spread of English around the world. It addresses issues such as the speaker's identity, teaching of English as an international langauge, and the use of English as a lingua franca in international professional contexts.

Course structure

Students complete 48 points as follows:

Semester one

Two of the following:

  • EIL4401 English in International Professional Contexts
  • EIL4402 Renationalizing English: Language, Culture, and Communication
  • ALM4250/ALM5250 Second language acquisition*

    * Offered every second year in odd-numbered years.

Semester two

Two of the following:

  • EIL4404 Issues in Teaching English as an International Language
  • LLC4070/LLC5070 Managing Intercultural Communication
  • ALM4250/ALM5250 Second language acquisition, (every even year)
  • ALM4150 Research Design in Applied Linguistics

Exit points

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate in English as an International Language.

Articulation

Graduates from the program may apply for entry into the Master of English as an International Language.
