Course description

As well as developing the intellectual capabilities inherent in the interpretation of sources of knowledge and the capacity for quantitative and qualitative analysis, critique and creative thinking in various humanities, arts and social science disciplines, this course gives students opportunities to develop an understanding of psychology as a scientific discipline and to appreciate the role it plays within society as a whole. The construction of major and minor sequences enables students to undertake specialised studies in humanities and social sciences in other disciplines to complement their learning in psychology.

Areas of study

The arts major may be chosen from Australian Indigenous studies, history-politics, Indonesian, communications, philosophy, sociology or writing (details on each discipline are provided under the entry for the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences).

Course requirements

Students must complete the following:

(a) A psychology major (54 points).

(b) An arts major (48 points).

(d) A further 12 points of arts (first, second or third-year level).

(e) A minimum of 36 points at third-year level.

Note that no more than 10 units (60 points) are to be completed at a first-year level.

Students have a maximum of eight years to complete this course.

Professional recognition

The major sequence in psychology is a common program offered on the Caulfield, Clayton and Gippsland campuses by the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. The Australian Psychological Society (APS)-accredited major comprises 10 six-point units: nine core units and one elective unit. Some third-level electives may be undertaken in second year, providing prerequisites and corequisites are met.

Students who wish to complete requirements for registration with the Australian Psychological Society (APS) may use one of their elective units to complete the additional unit.
