Course description

This course provides major studies in the theory, practice, technology and research techniques of mass communications together with studies at Chisholm TAFE that provide students with the theoretical base and the practical skills in a variety of writing, editing and production tasks.

Course structure

Students must complete 108 points in the Bachelor of Communication component and 10 modules in the Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing) component.

Areas of study

Arts sequences offered at Berwick include behavioural studies, Indonesian, international studies, journalism, psychology and visual culture. Alternatively, students select a sequence of arts units taught at one of the other campuses of the university. Students who opt for this alternative should note that it will involve travelling to another campus to attend lectures, and close attention will need to be paid to the lecture timetable.

Course requirements

Communication component

(a) A major in communications (48 points).

(b) A first-year sequence in visual culture -- VSA1000 and VSA1050.

(c) A minor in an arts discipline (24 points).

(d) Additional arts studies - electives (12 points).

Professional writing and editing component

Students must complete 10 modules chosen from the following:

  • Role of the editor
  • Industry overview I
  • Short story writing 1A and 1B

  • Scriptwriting 1A and 1B
  • Poetry 1A and 1B
  • Corporate writing 1A and 1B
  • Popular fiction 1A and 1B
  • Writing for radio

plus eight of the following:

  • Authoring a multimedia project 2
  • Editing 2A and 2B
  • Literary non-fiction project 2
  • Myths symbols A and B
  • Non-fiction project 2A and 2B
  • Novel 2A and 2B
  • Performance workshop 2
  • Scientific and technical writing 2
  • Screenwriting fiction project 2
  • Short story writing 2A and 2B
  • Small press publishing 2
  • Writing histories 2A and 2B
  • Writing for young adults A and B
  • Writing for children (older readers) A and B

Note that students have a maximum of 10 years to complete this course.
