Students will graduate with a major in psychology that is recognised by the Australian Psychological Society, and will also possess a full welfare qualification, recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Work. Special requirementsAll applicants are required to complete a social and community welfare course administration form, available from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences, or www.arts.monash.edu.au/humcass/forms.html. Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of information contained in this form. Short-listed, on-campus applicants will be invited to attend a compulsory interview in early December and must also apply through VTAC. Short-listed off-campus learning applicants may be required to do a telephone interview, depending on when they submit their application. Applicants are strongly advised that entry into the course is not solely on academic criteria, other factors such as work and life experience, personal qualities and maturity are also taken into account. Course structureStudents must complete 96 points in the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Humanities) component and 96 points in the Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare component. Areas of studyFor information on majors and minors offered, refer to the ‘Areas of study’ section on the Arts faculty website at www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/. Minors can be taken in Australian Indigenous studies, Australian studies, communications, community studies, history-politics, journalism, philosophy, public relations, sociology or writing. Course requirementsStudents must complete a minimum of 36 points at third-year level. Arts (psychology and humanities) component(a) A psychology major (54 points). (b) An arts minor (24 points). (c) A further 24 points in arts. Social and community welfare component(a) The prescribed sequence in social and community welfare (84 points). (b) One compulsory unit (6 points) -- SCY1801 or SCY1802. Students who wish to take the additional unit required for registration with the Australian Psychological Society (APS) may do so as part of their elective points. Unit details for the psychology major sequence can be found in the entry ‘Units from other faculties recognised as arts units - Psychology’ earlier in this section. Note that psychology is only offered by off-campus learning at the Gippsland campus. Note that students have a maximum of 10 years to complete this course. Professional recognitionThe major sequence in psychology is a common program offered by the Department of Psychology on the Caulfield and Clayton campuses and at the Gippsland campus by off-campus mode. The Australian Psychological Society (APS)-accredited major comprises 10 six-point units: nine core units and one elective unit. This course is also recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.
