Regulations and policies

All faculty regulations and policies are published on the Arts faculty website at www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/policy/.

Students are advised to familiarise themselves with this information to ensure their studies conform to all requirements. Access to the university policy bank is also available from this site.

Students are strongly encouraged to contact faculty staff if they have any questions or concerns relating to the relevance or implementation of a particular policy.

Fees

Information on course fees, student contribution amounts (SCAs), student learning entitlements (SLEs) and all fee-related matters are published on the central university fees website at www.monash.edu.au/fees/. EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) values are published with individual unit information in the unit section of this handbook.

Entry requirements

Information on entry requirements for Faculty of Arts courses can be found on the website at www.arts.monash.edu.au/prospective/, or by contacting the Prospective Students Office (telephone +61 3 9905 4164 or visit www.monash.edu.au/pso/).

Mid-year entry

The majority of Commonwealth-supported places are taken at the start of the academic year. Entry into courses is normally at the start of the academic year. Mid-year entry into Commonwealth-supported places may be offered at the discretion of the faculty, and students should consult with the faculty office on the relevant campus, or visit www.arts.monash.edu.au/prospective/. International and full-fee places into most courses are usually available for mid-year entry. Students should consult with the relevant faculty office for details.

Definitions

Additional information on important terms is available online at www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/admin/courseadvising/.

First-year-level sequence

A first-year-level sequence consists of two related first-year units in the same discipline (normally taken in first and second semester of the same year). Courses are made up of units, each of which has a value of 6 points (or multiples thereof).

Major

A major is three levels of study in the same discipline. For their major, students must complete at least 48 points including a first-year-level sequence (12 points) AND EITHER 12 points of second-year-level studies and 24 points of third-year-level studies OR 18 points of second-year-level studies and 18 points of third-year-level studies. Requirements for a major can vary, and students should check discipline requirements when selecting a major by referring to the ‘Areas of study’ section on the Arts faculty website at www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/.

Minor

A minor is a group of units from the same discipline, totalling 24 points (normally four units taken over two years), including no more than 12 points at first-year level. Requirements for a minor can vary, and students should also check discipline requirements when selecting a minor by referring to the ‘Areas of study’ section on the Arts faculty website at www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/.

Prerequisites, corequisites and prohibitions

A prerequisite is a unit that you must have successfully completed in order to be eligible to enrol in another unit in the same or a related discipline.

A corequisite is a unit which must be studied at the same time as another unit.

A prohibition is a unit that may not be studied if you enrol in or have already completed another unit, ie you are prohibited from enrolling in PSY1011 if you have already completed or are currently enrolled in BHS1711. Prohibitions are put in place when two or more units share common content.

As a general rule, you must complete two or more units in the same discipline prior to advancing to the next year level. It is your responsibility to check the individual unit entries in the handbook for the prerequisite and corequisite requirements (www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/).

Note that students would normally be required to undertake two first-year sequences before proceeding to second-year units. Part-time students requesting to proceed to a second-year unit without having met this requirement should speak with a faculty course adviser before enrolling.

Specialisation sequence

A specialisation sequence requires the completion of six units
(36 points) and is not equivalent to a major.

Summer semester

The Faculty of Arts offers a limited number of units during the official university summer semester. Information on the summer semester is available on the website at www.adm.monash.edu.au/ssd/summer/.
