Course description

The course is designed to enable students to establish skills in evidence-based practice, quality use of medicine, practice-based research, and the provision of clinical pharmacy services at a high level.

Entry requirements

The course is open to pharmacists registered to practice in Australia. Applicants with a four-year undergraduate degree will be eligible at the end of their pre-registration year. Those with a three-year degree will be eligible following a period of clinical experience.

This course is offered every two years, and the next admission is 2007. Places are limited and acceptance may be via an interview process.

Advanced standing

Successful applicants who have commenced or completed other postgraduate programs in clinical pharmacy may apply for advanced standing. Advanced standing will be determined on an individual basis after a review of units completed, course documentation and marks achieved.

Course structure

The 48-point program combines didactic sessions at the university or at hospital sites and clinical experiential sessions including tutorials, seminars, case histories and ward rounds. Areas of study include biostatistics, epidemiology, theory and practice of evidence-based medicine, clinical pharmacology, interpretation of clinical data and pharmacotherapy.

Great importance is placed on active student participation in seminar presentations and discussion groups, and student performance is closely monitored. Each student will complete a four-week speciality rotation with an experienced clinical preceptor and will also carry out a small practice-based research project. Students must arrange the necessary time release from their employer to complete the placement and research project.
