Units indexed by faculty Master of NursingCourse code: 1250 + Course abbreviation: MNurs + Total credit points required: 72 + 3 semesters full-time, 6 semesters part-time Study mode and course locationOn-campus (Gippsland; Peninsula) Course descriptionThis course prepares advanced practice nurses with leadership skills to plan, implement and coordinate and evaluate health care, as well as formulate policy for a diverse and multicultural society. Graduates are often employed in senior positions in a wide range of health care and educational settings and contribute to the health of individuals, families and communities, as well as to the development of the profession. Entry requirementsApplicants must have a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent with a high level of achievement, at least two years clinical experience, and relevant registration (eg Division 1 with the Nurses Board of Victoria). In addition to these requirements, students wishing to undertake the research component of the course must have at least five years clinical experience or an appropriate postgraduate qualification. Course structureStudents may undertake coursework units only; or a combination of coursework units and project (24 points) involving research into an aspect of nursing which enhances nursing practice and patient care (the work should be approximately 15,000 words in length and meet the standards required for publication); or a combination of coursework units and minor thesis (36 points) involving systematic research into an area of interest and value to nursing (the work should be original, of approximately 25,000 words in length and lead to publication). Students are encouraged to discuss a range of options with the course coordinator in constructing their individual program of study. All students will be supervised in their research by a staff member from Monash University. Thesis and project guidelines are available from the School of Nursing. The option also exists for students to undertake a tagged master degree in the following specialist areas: critical care, education, emergency, gerontics, mental health and palliative care. To be eligible for a tagged award, 24 points of prior study in a practice specialty area must already have been completed (eg Graduate Certificate of Nursing (Children)). Students will then need to take the following study sequence: 12-point unit GHS9841 (Research methods and issues); and either a 24-point project and 12-point coursework unit or a 36-point minor thesis. AssessmentAssessment includes exams, seminar presentations, field-based report, virtual classroom tutorial participation, literature reviews, assignments, skills assessment, computer conferencing and essays.
