Course description

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in the Faculty of Law may be undertaken in any area of research offered by the Faculty of Law. The current principal research areas cover administrative law and regulations, commercial law, comparative law, constitutional law, construction law, courts, corporations and associations, criminal law and procedure, e-commerce and information technology, environment law, equity, evidence, family law, gender and law, health and medical law, human rights, intellectual property, international law, labour law, legal education, legal history, legal profession and practice, litigation and dispute resolution, natural resources law, property law, social security law, taxation law, torts, trusts and trustees.

Entry requirements

Normally, applicants for admission to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy will have qualified for the degree of Master of Laws, or the degree of Bachelor of Laws with first class or second class division A honours or an equivalent legal qualification considered appropriate by the Monash Research Graduate School Committee. Applicants are admitted on the basis of their academic records and proven research capabilities. Admission will also depend on the availability of staff to undertake supervision.

Course structure

Candidates for the PhD are required to complete a thesis up to 100,000 words.

Applications for admission to candidature for the PhD degree may be received at any time during the academic year. The application form, as well as information regarding scholarships and grants that may be available to applicants, can be obtained from the Monash Research Graduate School.
