Course description

This course is designed for local and international students who wish to gain a qualification to teach English to speakers of other languages in overseas locations.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either:

  • an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
  • an approved four-year bachelors degree, or
  • qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Applicants must also demonstrate their English proficiency.

English language proficiency requirements

Education in full English medium in an English-speaking country or one of the following ESL test results:

  • IELTS -- 6.5 global (with at least 6 for each sub-score)
  • TOEFL -- 577 with TWE of 4.5
  • Computer-based TOEFL -- 233 and an ER of at least 4.5 or equivalent level on Internet-based TOEFL

Course structure

Students must complete two 12-point units as follows:

  • EDF6233 Theory and practice of TESOL (12 points), and
  • EDF6236 Language, society and cultural difference (12 points), or
  • An approved general elective (12 points), or
  • EDF6010/20 Professional project (12 points), or
  • EDF6232 Professional practice for teachers of English as a foreign language* (12 points)

    * Note that students with less than three years of approved relevant teaching experience must complete EDF6232.
