Course description

This course is designed primarily to meet the requirements of trained teachers who wish to gain higher professional qualifications and expertise in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course applicants must hold either:

  • an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
  • an approved four-year bachelors degree, or
  • qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Applicants must also be experienced teachers who hold a teaching qualification recognised in Australia.

English language requirements

Applicants who are not native speakers of English will be required to demonstrate substantial competence in written and spoken English before admission. These requirements are:

(i) education in full English medium in an English-speaking country, or

(ii) IELTS -- 7.0 global (no score below 6); TOEFL -- 600 with TWE of 5; computer-based TOEFL -- 250.

Course structure

The course consists of 48 points of study. For professional accreditation, a 22-day fieldwork must also be completed in association with EDF6238 (Advanced practicum in language teaching: TESOL).

Students will complete four of the following 12-point specialist elective units:

  • EDF6233 Theory and practice of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL)
  • EDF6234 Curriculum design and evaluation in languages education,
    or EDF6210 Language testing and assessment,
    or EDF6201 Theory and principles of bilingual/immersion education
  • EDF6236 Language, society and cultural difference
  • EDF6238 Advanced practicum in language teaching: TESOL (includes 22 days fieldwork)

Articulation

Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma of Education (TESOL) who show satisfactory performance (credit level and above) in at least two units may, at the discretion of the course coordinator, make application to convert to candidature for the MEd (TESOL).
