Course description

This course is designed for teachers and educators who wish to increase their knowledge of literacy issues particularly as they relate to the early and middle years.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either:

  • an approved three-year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year, or
  • an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
  • an approved four-year bachelors degree, or
  • qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Advanced standing

Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Students who are trained Reading Recovery teachers may seek credit of one unit (12 points) toward the award of the postgraduate diploma. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer. Course structure

The course consists of 48 points of study. Students will complete four 12-point units (up to two specialist elective units and up to two general elective units):

Specialist elective units

Students may choose up to two specialist elective units from:

  • EDF6301 New literacy studies, and
  • EDF6115 Communication practices and the use of new media, or
  • EDF6308 School and community literacy practices

General elective units

Students may choose up to two general elective units from:

  • EDF6236 Language, society and cultural difference, and/or
  • Any other postgraduate unit

Articulation

Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma of Education (Literacy Studies) may complete a masters degree by undertaking up to a further two units (including a research core unit).
