Units indexed by faculty Graduate and postgraduate coursesGraduate studiesInitial teacher educationPre-service education of teachers is available at both undergraduate and graduate levels, offering qualifications in early childhood, primary, secondary and adult teaching. At the graduate level, the faculty offers one-year graduate diplomas of education*, building upon a three-year non-education degree. * Most Australian states and territories (including Victoria) recognise a one-year Graduate Diploma of Education, which builds upon a three-year, non-education degree as providing a four-year teacher education qualification. However, in some states and territories at least two years of preparation specifically in education studies may be required. Registration boards and employing authorities across the world may, similarly, have particular local requirements. Students wishing to teach at a specific location or setting outside Victoria are urged to check that a one-year graduate diploma together with an undergraduate degree is recognised. Early childhoodThe Graduate Diploma of Education (Early Childhood) is offered on the Peninsula campus. This course is designed as a fourth year of study for those who hold a bachelors degree, generally in a field other than education, and provides a qualification to teach in the early childhood years. It also prepares students to work in preschools, childcare centres, mobile kindergartens and family day care centres and in hospitals as play specialists. Primary teachingThe Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) is offered on the Peninsula campus. This course is designed as a fourth year of study for those who hold a bachelors degree, generally in a field other than education, and provides a qualification to teach in the primary years. Secondary teachingThe Graduate Diploma (Secondary) is offered on the Clayton (full-time and part-time) and Gippsland (part-time) campuses. The course is designed as a fourth year of study for those who hold a bachelors degree, in a field other than education, and provides a qualification to teach in the secondary years. Adult learning*The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (HEDU) provides a teaching qualification for Monash staff members who hold teaching positions within the university. It is offered through the Higher Education Development Unit (HEDU). * For postgraduate students, the work and learning studies programs are offered on the Clayton campus. It is designed to further knowledge of theory and practice in adult learning and development for education and training professionals working in TAFE, workplace and community settings. Other graduate coursesProfessional development studiesThe Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies) and the Graduate Diploma of Education (Professional Development Studies) provide opportunities for professional educators to upgrade their skills and qualifications and to use these studies as entry into postgraduate studies. Postgraduate coursesThe faculty offers a wide range of pathways in the Master of Education degree by coursework, either by direct enrolment at masters level or via postgraduate certificates and postgraduate diplomas, which fully articulate into the masters program. Students may undertake a general course or concentrate on one of a number of pathways. As a general rule, each consists of two compulsory core units and a combination of units chosen from a nominated list, units chosen from other specialist pathways, units undertaken in other faculties and project work. In some courses where registration or employment requirements are involved, additional units may be specified. PathwaysWhere students undertake a series of units that meet the requirements of an approved pathway, this pathway will be shown on their testamur. Articulation pathway for postgraduate certificates, diplomas and masters degreesThe basic structure follows the articulation pathway outlined below. The entry requirements for the postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas and masters degrees are generally the same. Applicants must hold either:
Students normally enrol in the higher-level award and have the option of exiting the course with a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma if the required units for those awards have been successfully completed.
General elective unitsWith options one, two and three of the Masters in Education courses, students must select a core research unit, a program elective and normally at least two specialist electives (except for general course option) and between two and four general electives. General electives do not need the approval of the course coordinator, unless under exceptional circumstances (ie if the student wishes to enrol in a unit from another faculty). If particular electives are suggested in any specific masters course, this will be highlighted in the list of electives via the Faculty of Education website at www.education.monash.edu.au. Eligibility for doctoral-level studiesCandidates who wish to proceed to doctoral-level studies (PhD or EdD) must meet the entry requirements by having completed research at honours or masters level. To be eligible for doctoral-level studies, Master of Education candidates must complete a research thesis, ie option three. They must achieve a grade of distinction or above for the thesis and an average of distinction or above in their coursework units. Curriculum and pedagogyThe Postgraduate Certificate of Education, the Postgraduate Diploma of Education and the Master of Education are designed to meet the needs of educators, educational administrators, managers, policy-makers and others interested in learning and education and in working in the wider educational community. In the generalist stream, students will be able to choose their units from across the broad spectrum of units offered in any one year. In the specialist streams, units will be specified.
