Entry requirements

Candidates with an honours degree or a masters qualifying with H1 or H2A result (including a distinction or above result in the research component) in women’s studies (or equivalent) are eligible for admission. Applicants without previous experience who have a postgraduate degree such as a fourth-year level graduate diploma or a masters by coursework with grades of distinction or above in at least three quarters of the subjects may be admitted to a 66% research degree, and as part of the required 24 points of coursework units enrol for a 12-point supervised research project. Mid-year entry is available.

Course structure

Candidates are required to submit a thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words (66%). The topic will be in the area of women’s studies and chosen in close consultation with the supervisor and graduate adviser. Students must also take two coursework units totalling 24 points, one of which must be WSM5180 or WSM5010 (unless completed at level four), plus an elective selected from among the level-five units listed at the end of this section. This program is recommended for candidates who may not have a strong academic background in feminist theory and gender issues or who are returning to study after a break and would benefit from undertaking coursework units to enhance their understanding of the field.

External candidature

Candidates undertaking a 66% research load will normally be required to enrol for all of the units in the coursework component on Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.

Minimum pass grade

The minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts in Women’s Studies by coursework and research is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
