Course description

The MA by research is a research degree, which takes one of two forms -it is either by thesis alone or by coursework combined with research (66%).

In conjunction with their supervisor, candidates will devise and carry out a research project that makes an original contribution to knowledge in the field. In addition to support from their supervisor, candidates will learn important skills about writing original work in philosophy in a series of induction seminars specific to philosophy. Research students attend and participate in a weekly postgraduate work-in-progress seminar.

Entry requirements

Honours degree with H2A average or better, or masters qualifying with a research component with a grade of H2A or above for both the overall program and the research component or applicants who do not have prior research experience but have completed a postgraduate degree or diploma with grades of distinction and above in three-quarters of their units may be admitted to the 66% research degree (these applicants will need to enrol for a 12-point supervised research project as part of the required 24 points of coursework).

Course structure

Students who take the 66% research option undertake coursework to a value of 24 points - ie two 12-point units - chosen from the section’s level-five offerings, and then complete a substantial thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words under the supervision of one or more staff members. All students attend staff and honours seminars, and engage in philosophical discussion with staff members and peers.

Level-five units

Units will be offered in both semesters to accommodate mid-year entry. PHM5010 is a prerequisite for PHM5110.

External candidature

Candidates undertaking a 66% research load will normally be required to enrol for all of the units in the coursework component on the Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.

Minimum pass grade

The minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
