Entry requirements

Applicants with at least a four-year honours degree with a grade of H1 or H2A, or the equivalent, and who have appropriate training in linguistics, can normally be admitted directly. Candidates who do not satisfy these entry requirements but who are interested in this course should contact one of the course coordinators.

Applicants without previous research experience who have a postgraduate degree such as a fourth-year-level graduate diploma or a masters by coursework with grades of distinction or above in at least three-quarters of the units may be admitted to a 66% research degree and as part of the required 24 points of coursework units enrol for a 12-point supervised research project.

Course structure

The research degree can be undertaken by thesis alone (100%) or by coursework combined with research (66%). Candidates undertaking the degree by 66% research are required to complete a thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words and complete two 12-point units from the school’s level five.

The unit ALM5150 (Research design in applied linguistics) may be an appropriate way for students to satisfy part of this requirement. In addition, domestic students may take any other level-five linguistics unit (see ALM unit listings for details).

External candidature

Candidates undertaking a 66% MA in Applied Linguistics will normally enrol for either both or only one of the coursework units on the Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.

Minimum pass grade

The minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts in Linguistics by research and coursework is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in the thesis and in any coursework unit taken.
