Master of Arts in English by coursework and research

Course description

On completion of the course, students should have consolidated and extended their knowledge of literature, literary theory and the contexts in which literature is produced and read. They should also have consolidated their skills in originating and pursuing research projects independently and extended their skills of analysis, composition and argument. They should also have completed a substantial research thesis which represents a significant contribution to knowledge in the field in which they are working. Mid-year entry is available.

Entry requirements

Candidates for admission to the MA by coursework and research should normally hold (a) first class (H1) or second class division A honours degree, or (b) first class or second class division A masters qualifying with a grade of distinction or above for the research component, or (c) applicants who do not have prior research experience but have completed a postgraduate degree or diploma with grades of distinction and above in three-quarters of their units may be admitted to the 66% research degree (these applicants will need to enrol for a 12-point supervised research project as part of the required 24 points of coursework).

Course structure

Students are required to complete two level-five, 12-point units totalling 24 points, plus a compulsory research thesis of between 20,000 and 25,000 words weighted at 66%. The choice of topic should be made in close consultation with the supervisor.

External candidature

Candidates undertaking a 66% research load will normally be required to enrol for all of the units in the coursework component on Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.

Minimum pass grade

The minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
