Course description

The course seeks to strengthen skills in communications research and analysis and to further students’ understanding of both the history and current structure of the communications industry in Australia and of the contemporary policy debates. The course is particularly designed to provide students with the necessary analytical research and writing skills to respond to the rapidly changing policy environment in communications. Most of the coursework units are taught in the Melbourne CBD. Mid-year entry is available

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirements are (i) a recognised four-year honours degree at minimum H2A level, or (ii) an appropriate masters qualifying with a research component with an overall grade of H2A or above, as well as a distinction or above in the research component, or (iii) a degree which is deemed to be equivalent. Applicants without previous experience who have a postgraduate degree such as a fourth-year level graduate diploma or a masters by coursework with grades of distinction or above in at least three quarters of the subjects may be admitted to a 66% research degree, and as part of the required 24 points of coursework units enrol for a 12-point supervised research project.

Course structure

Students entering the MA in Communications by coursework and research combined must complete two compulsory units:

  • COM5001 Researching and writing Australia
  • COM5010 Communications, convergence and public policy

plus a 66% thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words.

External candidature

Candidates undertaking a 66% research load will normally be required to enrol for all of the units in the coursework component on Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.

Minimum pass grade

The minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts in Communications is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
