Course description

This course offers a new and innovative program to international and local students. This is an advanced level coursework program which focuses on the study of contemporary Australia. It aims to develop students’ understanding of the diversity and extent of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian experience, and of Australian cultural and social forms in a global context. As a flexible and interdisciplinary program, the Master of Australian Studies will appeal to students with backgrounds in humanities subjects, such as literary and cultural studies, or in social science subjects, such as politics and international studies.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a bachelors degree (or international equivalent) with at least a credit average in the final year in any discipline, or a bachelors pass degree in any discipline with demonstrable professional experience at senior level in a relevant area. Applicants in the latter category will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees.

Course structure

Students undertake units to the value of 48 points at level 4 and 24 points at level 5.

Level 4

  • COM4001 Researching and writing Australia

and at least one of:

  • AUS4010 Australian society and culture
  • AUS4025 Australia in global perspective

plus at least one approved level 4 elective unit to the value of 12 points to be chosen from the following:

  • RLM4100 Religion in Australian society
  • PLM4370 Citizenship and democracy in Australian politics
  • ENM4370 Contemporary Australian poetry and fiction
  • HYM4320 Citizens: histories of Australian citizenship
  • PLM4800 Australian national government
  • One other 12-point level 4 unit with the approval of the course coordinator

Level 5

  • AUS5003 Research project in Australian studies (12 points)
  • Either AUS5010 Australian society and culture (if not taken as a level 4 unit), or
    AUS5025 Australia in global perspective (if not taken as a level 4 unit)

or one approved level 5 elective unit to the value of 12 points to be chosen from the following:

  • RLM5100 Religion in Australian society
  • PLM5370 Citizenship and democracy in Australian politics
  • ENM5370 Contemporary Australian poetry and fiction
  • HYM5320 Citizens: histories of Australian citizenship
  • PLM5800 Australian national government
  • One other 12-point level 5 unit with the approval of the course coordinator

Alternatively, students may, with the approval of the course coordinator, take:

  • AUS5035 Research dissertation in Australian studies (24 points)

Exit points

Students who have completed 24 points of the Master of Australian Studies may apply to exit with a Graduate Certificate of Australian Studies. Students who have completed 48 points of the Master of Australian Studies may apply to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Australian Studies.
