On-campus (Clayton)
This
course is articulated with the Diploma of the Built Environment offered at
Holmesglen Institute of TAFE. After successful completion of the first year of
this program (65% average), students may transfer directly into the second year
of the Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and
Management) at Monash's Clayton campus. The third year of the course is also
conducted at the Clayton campus. Throughout the program, there is strong
emphasis on the application of information technology and the holistic
development of the individual.
The Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and
Management) degree is of three years duration if taken full-time or up to six
years if taken part-time. These time limits include an allowance of one year
for completion of approved studies at TAFE.
This
is a new course structure for students entering level 1 of the program from
2005 onwards. Students who entered the program prior to 2005 should refer to
the handbook for the year in which they commenced the course.
The first level of the course is completed at an approved TAFE institute.
Students are awarded 48 credit points of advanced standing at level 1 on the
successful completion of all prescribed level 1 units taken in approved TAFE
institutes.
The second year introduces students to university-style training in
transportation, water supply engineering and civil engineering design in some
of the most popular construction materials. These include concrete, steel,
timber and masonry. The third year equips students with a combination of
advanced practical, technical and business skills for entering the workplace.
In addition to the six core or compulsory units taken at this level, students
are required to choose two elective units depending on their interests. The
core and elective units required at levels 2 and 3 in the course are listed in
full in the course list below.
Students who complete the program at an appropriate level and complete a
further three semesters of civil engineering study can also receive the
Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) degree.
Each student must complete all core units unless granted exemptions on the
basis of advanced standing. Forty-eight credit points will be awarded at level
1 on the successful completion of all prescribed level 1 units taken in
approved TAFE institutes.
Students should refer to 'Course map 17 - Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and Management)' at the back of this section for an outline of the course requirements for this program.
