Course description

This program is available to candidates pursuing studies in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and computer systems engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering and mechatronics engineering. Selection of students into their chosen engineering specialisation is based on academic performance and departmental quotas after the completion of the common first year of the course. Students complete 96 credit points including any arts major sequence and any arts minor sequence for the BA degree as taught by the Faculty of Arts. Language programs are aimed at engineers who wish to position themselves to take advantage of opportunities in industry and government requiring multilingual skills. There are obvious advantages also in the combination of visual culture and civil engineering, which enables engineers to enhance their ability to cooperate with architects in the design of building structures. The course also provides for students who, while completing engineering studies in one of six branches, wish to pursue an interest in sociology, history, philosophy, Asian studies or any other discipline taught by the Faculty of Arts.
Students are warned that timetabling difficulties may be encountered and that it may not be possible in all cases to complete the double degree in five years of full-time study. Students are responsible for compiling their own timetables, and should not exceed 30 credit points in any semester.

Course structure

In the first year of study, candidates should take level 1 engineering units worth 36 or 40 credit points (depending on VCE units completed) and a 12 credit-point first-year sequence in an arts discipline. Thereafter candidates may structure their courses as they wish, having regard to the constraints imposed by timetabling and the need to satisfy prerequisites for later year units. The latter will probably require most candidates to take some engineering and some arts units in each year of study. Candidates in language disciplines are advised to ensure continuity of language study.
The BA component of this double degree will require 96 credit points. This will include a major sequence (48 points), a minor sequence (24 points), another first-year sequence (12 points) and a further 12 points of arts units at any year level. All disciplines must be chosen from those taught by the Faculty of Arts as listed in the 'Areas of study' section of the faculty website at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/. All candidates are recommended to obtain the current requirements for their BA component from the Faculty of Arts at the time of enrolment.
Should a student discontinue the double-degree program and seek to take out a single degree, it will be necessary to complete all of the requirements of that single degree.
