Master of Family Medicine

Course codes: 0099 (MFamMed); 2677 (MFMClin)

Course description

The Department of General Practice offers this program in two streams, both specifically designed for general practitioners who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in areas relevant to general practice. The Master of Family Medicine is aimed at providing general practitioners with research and teaching skills to prepare them for potential academic general practice careers. The Master of Family Medicine (Clinical) aims to provide general practitioners with the opportunity to develop their clinical skills within a general practice setting. Recognition of prior learning is available within both streams.

Entry requirements

Both courses require applicants to be currently registered by the medical board in their respective state, or have a qualification which is eligible to be registered in a state of the commonwealth. A minimum of two years of work experience is essential, and preference will be given to applicants currently employed and who have been active in general practice for a minimum of two years. Special consideration may be given to suitably qualified overseas graduates residing in their own country.

Master of Family Medicine (Clinical)

Course structure

This 72-credit-point degree is offered part-time over three years by off-campus learning, or full-time over one year should students have completed the Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine. Recognition of prior learning is available to those applying directly into the Master of Family Medicine (Clinical) and who hold the FRACGP qualification or equivalent.
The coursework includes three compulsory core units as listed below, together with a selection of elective units similar to those offered under the Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine.

Master of Family Medicine

Course structure

This is a 96-credit-point degree offered via off-campus learning. It is recommended that the Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine is successfully completed in the first instance, as it is required that candidates achieve a credit or higher for the unit MFM2006 (Introduction to research methods). Candidates are required to undertake coursework and research part-time over a two-year period. The coursework includes elective units similar to those offered in the Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine, plus a compulsory core unit and minor thesis. Although MFM2007 (Learning and teaching) is not compulsory, it is highly recommended.

Assessment

Assessment for both streams will be by coursework participation, formal assignments, projects and minor thesis (MFM version only) and some weekend workshops.
