The Faculty of Information Technology refers, in the wider sense, to all
students enrolled for coursework and research programs offered by the faculty,
and all staff (academic, administrative, technical and clerical). The schools
in the faculty are the School of Business Systems, the School of Information
Management and Systems, the School of Computer Science and Software
Engineering, the Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology, the
School of Multimedia Systems, the School of Network Computing, the School of
Information Technology at the Malaysia campus and the School of Information
Technology at the South Africa campus. Monash IT, a company of Monash
University, works in close association with the faculty.
Legally, the faculty is a statutory body comprising all full-time members of
the teaching staff. The main business of the faculty is delegated to the
faculty board, a smaller body of about 52 that includes all heads of schools,
other school-based representatives, representatives of other faculties, and the
library, and representatives of graduates and students of the faculty. The
faculty board normally meets five times each year. The board has standing
committees that have the power to act on behalf of the board when an immediate
decision is required. These committees include the Education Committee, which
advises the board on matters relating to the coursework degrees and diplomas
offered by the faculty, including student workload and assessment, admission
and selection, and new course and unit offerings; the Research Committee, which
advises the board on matters relating to the graduate research programs of the
faculty, including admission, selection and maintenance of appropriate academic
standards; and the Student Progress and Exclusions Committee, which considers
cases of students who become liable for exclusion because of unsatisfactory
academic performance.
The senior officers of the faculty are the dean, and the executive registrar
(who are located on the Caulfield campus) and six associate deans. The dean
chairs meetings of the faculty, the faculty board and its committees (in some
instances the deputy dean presides on behalf of the dean). Any student wishing
to see the dean, an associate dean, or the faculty registrar is normally able
to make an appointment on request. Inquiries should be directed to the relevant
faculty office.
Students wishing to bring any relevant matters to the attention of the student
members of the faculty board should contact the relevant faculty office.
