Masters Qualifying in Visual Culture by coursework
Course code: 1987 + Mid-year entry available + 1 year
full-time, 2 years part-time + On-campus (Clayton)

The
masters qualifying program is intended primarily for students who wish to
pursue areas of visual arts or visual culture at an advanced level but who do
not have a completed honours degree. As a means to study at MA level, it
parallels the postgraduate diploma but is similar to the honours program in
structure.
Applicants
require a Bachelor of Arts pass degree with a major sequence in visual arts,
film studies or visual culture and an average result at third year of at least
credit level.
Students
complete 48 points comprised of four units chosen from the list below:
- VAM4000 Research essay in visual culture
- VAM4010 Visual culture and its theories
- VAM4020 Theory of art history and criticism (not offered in 2005)
- VAM4021 Beyond the museum: institutions and insurrections (not offered
in 2005)
- VAM4023 Visual culture internship
- VAM4030 Themes in nineteenth-century Australian art (not offered in
2005)
- VAM4050 Twentieth-century Australian modernism
- VAM4070 Towards an Australian postmodernism (not offered in 2005)
- VAM4084 The culture and imagery of cities (not offered in 2005)
- VAM4100 Issues in Australian architecture and heritage (not offered in
2005)
- VAM4200 Historical film theory and criticism
- VAM4210 Contemporary film theory and criticism
- VAM4830 Exploration and immigration in the cultural imaginary (not
offered in 2005)
- CRT4760 Gender, body and performance
Students
completing this course at a credit average or higher may then enter the Master
of Visual Culture by coursework program. Candidates who gain an average result
grade of distinction or high distinction may apply for entry into the MA by
research programs.
