full-time, 3 years part-time + On-campus (Clayton)
Course coordinator: Ross Mouer
This course is designed so that students who complete the course will have the basic knowledge and sensitivities to be able to interact with persons from a variety of Asian societies. To that end, graduates of the course will be able to make an initial assessment of current events in Asia, to understand ways in which and the reasons why the notions of Asia and Asian values have become so problematic in recent times, and to respond positively to policy initiatives being developed in and for Asian settings.
A bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year; or a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience in a relevant area. Applicants in the latter category will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and names of two professional referees.
Students must complete 72 points of coursework to attain this degree. Students complete two core units of 12 points each and four 12-point electives; students may do four six-point language units to meet 24 points of the elective requirements. One elective must be in the Arts faculty; two of the four must be in a related field or area of study. The course is designed to allow students to structure their programs in one of three ways. The coursework option allows students to complete the degree wholly by doing coursework units. Normally this would consist of six 12-point units. Students who are more research orientated or who wish to apply for admission to a research degree may choose to do five 12-point coursework units or their equivalent for 60 points and a 12-point research project (AST4110/AST5110). Those wishing to have a vocational emphasis may choose to do five 12-point coursework units or their equivalent for 60 points and to complete AST5110 as a policy paper. All students will be given the opportunity to make an end-of-the-program presentation which may discuss issues raised in their research or coursework. Students will be encouraged to integrate themes in the various electives they have taken into the larger context of Asia and Asian studies.
To graduate with the Master of Asian Studies, students must gain a credit (60 C) or above in each of the two core units and a minimum credit average overall.
After successful completion of 24 points of level 4 units, including one core unit, students may apply to exit the program with the Graduate Certificate of Arts. After successful completion of a further 24 points at either levels 4 or 5, including two core units, students may apply to exit with the Graduate Diploma in Asian Studies.
