Postgraduate handbook 2005 - Arts
English language requirements
Students whose first language is not English must meet the university's
English language requirements. These may be met in one of the following
ways:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing Service): minimum test score
of 6.5 (including score of at least 6.0 for each band). TOEFL (Test of English
as a Foreign Language): paper-based test, minimum score of 577, including Test
of Written English score of 5. Computer-based test, minimum score of 233,
including essay rating of 5.
- Students seeking admission to translation studies programs are required by
the faculty to achieve a higher IELTS score of 7.0 overall (including 7.0 for
writing and at least 6.0 for each band), or a TOEFL equivalent of 600 overall,
including a Test of Written English score (TWE) of 5.
- Successful completion of a course of tertiary studies of at least two years
duration requiring formal assessment of written work in an English-speaking
country together with, at the faculty's discretion, documentary evidence
of recent diagnostic testing indicating an acceptable overall score in the
IELTS test (see above) or TOEFL test (see above).
- Successful completion of a course of tertiary studies of at least two years
duration conducted entirely in English and requiring formal assessment of
written work in an institution where the official language of instruction and
communication is English, together with, at the faculty's discretion,
documentary evidence of recent diagnostic testing indicating an acceptable
overall score in the IELTS test (see above) or TOEFL test (see above).
- Satisfactory completion of the English Language Bridging Program at the
Monash University English Language Centre.
