Masters qualifying programs are designed to prepare students for a masters
or PhD and are not a formal qualification in their own right. Two kinds of
programs are offered: masters qualifying with a research component (similar to
an honours degree) and masters qualifying by coursework (similar to a
postgraduate diploma). Students normally complete the programs in one year of
full-time or two years of part-time study and undertake fourth-year level units
to the value of 48 points.
Students should note that it is not possible to graduate with the award of
`masters qualifying'. Masters qualifying by coursework programs lead into
48-point masters by coursework programs. Masters qualifying with a research
component programs are similar to honours degree programs and are intended for
students wishing to proceed to masters by research degrees or the PhD. See

Students undertaking a masters qualifying program (MQual), either with a
research component or by coursework, must obtain at least a credit average (60
C) in order to have satisfactorily completed the program. A weighted average
will be used in the calculation, ie the mark for each unit will be considered
relative to its points. In some programs, a minimum grade of credit (60 C) may
be required for some or all of the core units. Refer to the individual programs
listed under each discipline. Marks for units for which advanced standing
(credit) has been granted will not be taken into consideration in the
calculation.
Students undertaking the masters qualifying with a research component must
obtain a distinction result in the research project and a distinction average
overall to be eligible to proceed to a research degree.
Students who have completed the masters qualifying but are unable to proceed to
further studies may apply to exit with the relevant graduate (or postgraduate)
diploma.
The minimum entry requirement into the masters qualifying programs is a credit average in the third part of the major sequence or in the final year of a bachelors degree. Some programs may require students to have achieved distinction average grades - refer to the entry requirements for individual programs.
