Master of Arts in Publishing by coursework and research

Course description

The publishing industry is a significant employer of tertiary-educated and otherwise highly skilled staff in the long-established book and magazine sectors, and now also the electronic publishing sector. This course will offer students an opportunity to undertake a postgraduate research qualification with a minor coursework component. The course will be of special relevance to those wishing to enhance their skills in the publishing industries and undertake a major research task, with the benefit of expert supervision.

Entry requirements

Candidates for admission would normally possess a four-year honours degree with an H2A grade, or equivalent, or a masters qualifying with a research component, or equivalent, to at least H2A level overall as well as a distinction or above in the research component.

Course structure

Candidates will be expected to complete fifth-year units to the equivalent of 24 points. PUB5002 is a core unit required by candidates in the 66% MA in Publishing who have not completed the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Publishing and Editing or equivalent.

In addition, candidates are expected to complete a 66% thesis of 20,000 to 25,000 words.
Students are expected to meet with their supervisor at least on a monthly basis during the completion of their thesis.
Normal contact hours for each 12-point unit amounts to the equivalent of two hours a week.

External candidature

Candidates undertaking a 66% research load will normally be required to enrol for all of the units in the coursework component on the Clayton campus and may then apply for transfer to external candidature.

Minimum pass grade

The minimum pass grade for units in the Master of Arts in publishing and editing is 60 C, ie a grade of credit or above is required in every unit and for the thesis.
