International development refers to international aid, development and poverty alleviation in non-industrialised and industrialising countries. It focuses on contemporary concerns with the theory and practice of environmental sustainability within the context of globalisation. Research in international development draws on the strong track record and research strengths of the school and the faculty in the study of social, political and cultural change in the Asia-Pacific region. Research projects in international development typically adopt a transdisciplinary approach and focus on development and/or environment issues in a third world country.
Supervision of PhD and masters candidature is available for research which relates to global production systems, foreign investment, devolution of governance, centralisation of geopolitical power, changing concepts of property in natural resource exploitation and management, poverty, ethnic minorities and political participation and representation.
