Course code: 2872 + Off-campus (Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Central and Eastern Clinical School) + Full-fee-paying course: $TBC (Australian residents); $37,750 (international students)
The course is specifically designed for professionals working within the health care sector who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in the management of health services. It caters for the special needs of medical and general hospital administrators, clinician doctors, quality assurance managers, team leaders, senior nursing administrators, unit managers and the range of general task coordinators within the health care system.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline and relevant professional experience. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience. In such instances, the department may require the completion of the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management before enrolling in the masters program.
Most units have a 15-hour compulsory block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne during one week of the semester. Units are coordinated to allow students to attend the teaching sessions of two units in the same week. The teaching sessions are interactive and experiential and aim to discuss, clarify and reinforce the course content and assessment requirements. A number of guest lecturers who are recognised experts in the health services management field are involved. Students are recommended to undertake the units MPH2040 (Introductory epidemiology) and MPH2041 (Introductory biostatistics), offered on-campus. Block teaching is followed by weekly internet-based coursework for most units.
The course comprises 72 credit points.
It consists of nine or
seven core and four elective units taken over either a 12 to
18-month
period of three full-time semesters or a three-year period of six part-time
semesters.
* Note: Units MPH2040 and MPH2041 are not available for study in off-campus learning mode. The units may be studied on-campus or equivalent units studied elsewhere as cross-institutional units.
Assessment consists of web-based tasks, written assignments, examinations and individual and group presentations.
The Master of Health Services Management satisfies the course requirements of the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators' (RACMA) full fellowship and aims to meet the requirements of the Australian College of Health Services Executives (ACHSE).
