Master of Risk Management

Course code: 3153 + Course abbreviation: MRiskMgt + Off-campus (Caulfield) + Normally three years part-time + Course director: Mr Michael Vincent + Total credit points required: 72

This masters program recognises the fundamental importance of risk management in today's commercial world and seeks to provide graduates with extended skills in these areas. It prepares students for the increasingly complex risk management issues they will face when employed in many areas of business and in government agencies. The course also provides education for practitioners seeking to meet professional education requirements or update their knowledge in specific risk management areas. It is also suitable for people who regularly deal with risk management issues in other business areas such as financial planning or investment.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

a pass degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution, or
a Graduate Diploma in Risk Management with an average grade of credit or above.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of six units considered to be equivalent to particular requirements in the course of study and is restricted to study completed in the last five years.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete eight core units (48 credit points):

AFF9020 Introduction to risk principles
AFF9770 Risk financing and treasury management
BTF9760 Risk control and the law
ETX9520 Quantitative methods for risk analysis
BTF4031 Insurance law
AFF4031 Principles of risk transfer
AFF5011 Issues in risk management
AFF5021 Case studies in risk management

(b) Students must complete four units
(24 credit points) from any faculty across the university as nominated or subject to approval of the course director. The electives are to be chosen from 4000-level or 5000-level units.
