Master of Human Resource Management

This course provides current and aspiring managers with the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and expertise in human resource management, with an emphasis on strategic issues. Students commence their studies with foundation units focusing on contemporary issues related to managing human resources, organisational change, and industrial relations. Students then select units to suit their own interests and requirements by choosing from the wide range of elective units offered by the Department of Management. The course involves the study of theoretical and research developments and analysis of contemporary examples of human resource management.
Admission requirements
Applicants need to have completed:
- a pass degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution, or an executive certificate from this faculty with an average of credit or above
- a minimum of two years relevant employment experience
Advanced standing
Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of six units considered to be equivalent to particular requirements in the course of study. Advanced standing is restricted to study completed in the last five years. The program coordinator assesses advanced standing.
Course structure

Students must complete seven core units (42 credit points):
- MGX9220 Industrial relations, or
- MGX9180 Employee relations
- MGX9600 Managing people and organisations
- MGX9720 Managing in a changing environment
- MGX9850 Human resource management
- MGX5261 Human resource management issues
- MGX5631 International human resource management
- MGX5551 Strategic human resource management

Students must complete five units (30 credit points) as follows:
- Two units (12 credit points) from 9000-level graduate units taught by the Department of Management, other departments from the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties of Monash University, subject to program coordinator approval, and
- Three electives chosen from 5000-level units taught by the Department of Management, or other departments of the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other Monash faculties, subject to program coordinator approval, or
- One elective unit from 9000-level graduate units as above and in place of four elective units, students may enrol in MGX5901 (Research report – introduction) (12 credit points) and MGX5900 (Research report) (12 credit points).
Students must study a minimum of six 5000-level units or equivalent.
Students should complete four 9000-level graduate units before commencing 5000-level units.
