Bachelor of Multimedia Systems

Course code: 3322 + Course coordinator: Mr Lindsay Smith + Full-time or part-time study + Study mode: on-campus + New course - commences in 2004

The Bachelor of Multimedia Systems, introduced this year, replaces the Bachelor of Multimedia, the Bachelor of Multimedia Computing, the Bachelor of Multimedia Business and Computing. This new single degree focuses on multimedia/digital and interactive technologies, with four optional majors:

Entry requirements

Two entry points into this degree will be offered.

Entry into the generic Bachelor of Multimedia Systems

Entry to the course requires a VCE study score of at least 25 in units 3 and 4 of English, and successful completion of units 1 and 2 of mathematics (any). Equivalent studies will be accepted.

Entry to the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems (Games Development)

Entry to the BMS games specialisation requires a VCE study score of at least 25 in units 3 and 4 of English, and successful completion of units 3 and 4 of Mathematical Methods (or higher). Equivalent studies will be accepted.

Accreditation

Arrangements are in place for the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems to be accredited with the Australian Computer Society.

Course structure

The degree will be awarded as a tagged degree, eg the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems (Applications), if the course requirements for a particular major have been met. Otherwise the degree will be awarded untagged as the Bachelor of Multimedia Systems in cases where a student has selected a `mix-n-match' set of major units to meet their individual study/career needs. For students who have not obtained direct entry to the games development major via VTAC, entry will be permitted on the basis of a distinction average for all first-year units (core and programming major) plus a high distinction for MMS1802 (Object-oriented programming 1).

Common core

All students must complete 11 core units:

Major

All students must complete nine units of study selected from the BMS majors. These units do not necessarily have to be selected from the same major. All students must complete four electives (for details see the course map 16.0).

Honours

Outstanding students who wish to gain a deeper knowledge and understanding of aspects of multimedia may choose to take a fourth year of study, called an honours year. Completion of an honours year is essential for those wishing to pursue a research career. Entry into the Bachelor of Multimedia honours year will require completion of the Bachelor of Multimedia pass degree, or equivalent qualifications, with an overall grade average of credit. (Note that from semester one in 2005, this degree will be offered under the title of Bachelor of Multimedia Systems Honours.)
