Course list V: branches of study for the double degree of BE and BA

The Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Arts double-degree program is available to candidates pursuing studies in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical and computer systems engineering, materials engineering and mechanical engineering, and can normally be completed in five years of full-time study (see note 1 below). This degree is available at Clayton campus only.

Bachelor of Engineering

The units required for the BE in each of the engineering courses are listed below, and the requirements for degree completion are stipulated at the end of all the lists. Please note that students admitted with VCE Mathematical Methods and one only of Chemistry and Physics will be required to take one additional first-level unit in order to satisfy level 1 requirements, making a total of 40 cps.

Bachelor of Arts

The BA component of this double degree will require 96 credit points. This will include a major sequence (48 points), a minor sequence (24 points), another first-year sequence (12 points) and a further 12 points of arts units at any year level. All disciplines must be chosen from those taught by the Faculty of Arts as listed in the Arts section of this handbook. All candidates are recommended to obtain the current requirements for their BA component from the Faculty of Arts at the time of enrolment.

Notes

1. The BE/BA was originally established to enable candidates concurrently to study engineering and one of several languages and related units. Given that any arts major and any arts minor sequence can be taken, candidates are warned that timetabling difficulties may be encountered and that it may not be possible in all cases to complete the double degree in five years of full-time study.
2. Candidates are responsible for compiling their own timetables, and should not exceed 30 credit points in any semester.
3. Structure. In the first year of study, candidates should take level 1 engineering units worth 36 credit points and a 12-point first-year sequence in an arts discipline. Thereafter candidates may structure their courses as they wish, having regard to the constraints imposed by timetabling and the need to satisfy prerequisites for later-year units. The latter will probably require most candidates to take some engineering and some arts units in each year of study. Candidates in language disciplines are advised to ensure continuity of language study.
