Engineering

Bachelor of Engineering

The Monash Malaysia campus commenced the engineering program in July 1998. The common first year provides students with the appropriate preparation for all the branches of engineering. The branches of engineering currently available in Malaysia include electrical and computer systems engineering, mechatronics engineering and mechanical engineering. These programs can be completed entirely in Malaysia. They are the same programs as those available on Monash's Australian campuses. Intakes occur twice a year (February and July).

The BE programs in mechanical engineering, and in mechatronics engineering have received full accreditation from Engineers Australia. Through the Washington Accord, the degree will thus be recognised by some 40 engineering institutions throughout the world. These programs have also recently received full accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Council of Malaysia (EAC). The EAC consists of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Lembaga Akreditasi Negara (LAN) and Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (JPA). The electrical and computer systems engineering program currently has provisional accreditation. When the first cohort of students complete the electrical program in December 2003, that specialisation will also be evaluated for full accreditation by Engineers Australia and EAC.
Other engineering branches may be offered in the future, but students wishing to complete those branches at present will have to transfer to the relevant Australian campus. Approval for transfer is subjected to academic performance and quota.

BE degree in mechatronics engineering

Mechatronics engineering by its very nature requires an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. It is built on a basis of mechanical, electronics and electrical engineering, binding each of these disciplines not only with each other but also with computer science and software engineering. Mechatronics engineering brings together the fundamentals, procedures and techniques for the design, production and service of future-oriented machines and devices. Industries that design and produce modern products that are both up-to-date and economically produced, and that wish to keep abreast of modern technology, will create a ready demand for mechatronics engineering graduates. The structure and content in terms of the various disciplines and activities addressed by the branch can be identified as mechanics, electronics, computing, mechatronics, management, industrial experience, mathematical tools, projects and broad discipline units.
