General course information

The Bachelor of Business Studies is a degree program that is offered through Open Learning Australia. The course includes units offered by Monash University as well as units available from other universities. Students wishing to take out a Monash degree should note that they must include a minimum of eight Monash units to be eligible for a Monash degree.

Majors and other studies in the degree

Students must complete a major in one of either management, marketing or retail.
Other studies can be chosen from any of the undergraduate-level units listed in the 2004 OLA handbook. Specific specialisations are available in the areas of agribusiness and business law.

Course structure

Students must complete and pass a minimum of two Open Learning units (one of which must be Monash provided) before they are eligible to register and confirm their place with Monash University directly in the Bachelor of Business Studies. Once students have registered with Monash University, they have 10 years in which to complete the degree requirements.
Unit codes are shown as per the OLA handbook.

The degree requirements are:
(a) Completion of six compulsory units (36 credit points):

(b) Outer core - completion of six outer-core units (36 credit points), including the two compulsory units (12 credit points) listed below and a further four units (24 credit points) from the remaining units listed below:

Management major

Plus four of the following:

Marketing and retail majors

Two compulsory outer-core units:

Plus four of the following:

(c) Strand - the following six units (36 credit points) are compulsory and complete a major sequence in the discipline chosen:

Management
Marketing
Retail

(d) Completion of a further six units (36 credit points) of other studies from any of the undergraduate level units listed in the OLA handbook that satisfy the following regulations:
(i) Students must complete a total of 24 units (144 credit points).
(ii) Students must complete at least eight Monash-provided business units to be eligible for the award of the Bachelor of Business Studies.
(iii) Where students intend to complete a double major, the six open electives will be used in undertaking the six strand units prescribed for the second major.
(iv) Students who have not completed 24 units but have completed the compulsory units and one major may select their remaining units from those listed above or from other university level units offered by OLA, provided that they complete a minimum of eight Monash business units.
(v) Students intending to seek employment within the business sector or to apply for an honours program offered through a university are advised to take electives from within the business and economics area.

(vi) Students intending to work in either the retail or agribusiness sectors are advised to complete minors in these areas.

Marketing (cannot be taken with a marketing major)
Retail (cannot be taken with a retail major)
