General course information

The Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Business Systems double degree provides professional education in a range of commerce and business disciplines, with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills. It offers studies in business-oriented computer skills that will enable graduates to work confidently in the business or public sector, particularly with the application of computerised business systems.

Majors and other studies in the degree

Students must complete a major specialisation in one of the following disciplines taught by the faculty: accounting, finance, economics, business law and taxation, econometrics and business statistics, management or marketing. All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus (ie the third character of the unit code is C).
Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Students must also complete the prescribed program of business systems units from the Faculty of Information Technology.
All units studied must be from the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Information Technology.

Course structure

The degree requirements are:
(a) Students must complete 17 units (102 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:
(i) Ten compulsory units (60 credit points):

Students wishing to take first-year units other than those on the above list are able to undertake the second-year versions of the appropriate number of compulsory units. First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.
(ii) A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 credit points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least 12 credit points at each of second and third-year level (disciplines are defined by department prefixes and fields of study are those sets of related units that may be defined in the catalogue of courses and units). All units taken as part of the major specialisation must be taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus (ie the third character of the unit code is C).
(iii) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 credit points).
(iv) A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 credit points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
(b) Students must complete 14 units (84 credit points) from the School of Business Systems as follows:
(i) The compulsory units BUS1010, BUS1021, BUS1042, BUS1060, BUS1110, BUS2011, BUS2120, BUS2021, BUS2176, BUS3112, BUS3150, BUS3600.
(ii) At least one electronic commerce unit (six credit points) and at least one business analysis unit (six credit points) from the School of Business Systems.

(c) One further unit (six credit points) from either the department of Business Systems or the Faculty of Business and Economics.
The following units are excluded from the double degree: AFC2160, BUS1100, BUS3522.
The following combinations of units are excluded from the double degree: AFC2140 or AFC3140 and BUS3030.
The degree must be completed in a maximum of 10 years of study.
Students should have their program of study approved by the course coordinator or the course coordinator's nominee prior to commencement of the relevant year.
