Bachelors degrees
Double degrees
Honours degrees

General campus information

Unless otherwise stated in the individual course entry section of this publication, entry requirements, advanced standing policy, fees information, professional accreditation information and contact details for further inquiries for all Clayton campus single and double degrees are standard and are listed below:

Entry requirements

(a) Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

For the single degrees, and unless noted in the entry for each double degree, admission to Clayton requires units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in both English (any) and in either Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics.

(b) Comparable qualifications

Applicants may also satisfy entry requirements with qualifications equivalent to VCE, including International Baccalaureate. Although successful completion of at least two units at university level is preferred, students with at least a distinction average in a relevant TAFE may also apply.

(c) Special admission

Students who have not successfully completed VCE or equivalent may satisfy entry requirements by completing at least two Monash non-award single unit or Open Learning (OLA) units related to the program they wish to enter. Normally, four single units with at least a credit average in a commerce-related area are required to be competitive for selection. Further information is contained in the Monash University booklet `Returning to study: a guide for mature-age and non-school-leaver applicants', available from the Prospective Students Office, telephone (03) 9905 1320.

Advanced standing

In addition to part one, section five of the degree regulations, (http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/calendar/facultyregs/regs-bus01.html), where such credit fits with relevant faculty policies and the student's proposed degree program, the following advanced standing has been recommended as the maximum available for the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics degrees:

Note that a TAFE certificate IV is not recognised as meeting the admission requirements for Clayton programs.

Fees

Fees will depend upon the student's residency status. Local residents will be liable for the fees set by the government under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) or on a full-fee-payment basis. International students will pay fees at the rate set by the university for non-resident students. For further fee information, visit http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/ssd/fees/.

Professional accreditation

Management

Graduates of Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Economics degrees at Clayton are eligible for:

Marketing

Graduates of Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Economics degrees at Clayton are eligible for:

Accounting

Students who wish to obtain maximum exemptions for admission to either CPA Australia or the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia should include the following units in their degree:

* CPA Australia does not require AFC3160 or BTC3150 to be completed as part of the undergraduate degree. If they are not completed, taxation and auditing must then be completed as electives in the CPA Program, and students are required to bring themselves up to the required assumed level of knowledge prior to commencing the relevant CPA segments. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that both AFC3160 and BTC3150 are completed.
# The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia does not require that either AFC3130 or AFC3140 be completed.

Bachelor of Commerce/LLB and Bachelor of Economics/LLB students should normally take the law units LAW2100, LAW5106 and LAW5213 instead of BTC2110, BTC2210 and BTC3150 to obtain professional accreditation.

Auditor/liquidator

Graduates of Bachelor of Commerce degrees at Clayton are eligible for registration as an auditor or liquidator with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (http://www.asic.gov.au) and should obtain registration with CPA or ICAA, or undertake a faculty degree majoring in accounting with four units (including `Corporations law and trusts') from the Department of Business Law and Taxation

Finance and banking

Students who wish to obtain maximum exemptions for senior associate membership of the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance should note that the institute now recognises several specialisations. Students should select their specialisation according to their interests, abilities and career prospects. The educational requirements of the two specialisations are as follows:

Corporate finance specialisation

Plus any three of the following units:

In addition, although not strictly required for membership, students seeking professional accreditation through the corporate finance specialisation would be well advised to include AFC3170 (Management of financial intermediaries) in their degree.

* Taught at Caulfield campus but can be counted towards the Clayton degrees.

Taxation

Students who wish to obtain registration with the Tax Agents Board must complete an accounting degree and include in their study an approved taxation law unit. Details can be found in Regulation 156 of the Income Tax Regulations Act 1936 (http://www.ato.com.au).
All Clayton degrees are capable of meeting the Tax Agents Board requirements, but students must make the correct unit choices.
