The undergraduate program

Entry requirements

Unless otherwise stated in the `Outline of undergraduate studies' section of this publication, entry requirements to Faculty of Business and Economics courses are successful completion of VCE including:

Berwick, Gippsland and Peninsula

For courses at Berwick, Gippsland and Peninsula, students require: units 1 and 2 - any two units from General Mathematics and/or Mathematical Methods, or completion of the Open Learning Bridging Unit UNL31 Introductory Mathematics; units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any).

Caulfield

For courses at Caulfield, students require: units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any) and mathematics (any).

Clayton

For single courses at Clayton, students require: units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any) and in one of Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics.

Monash University Malaysia

Students must satisfy the following prerequisites to be eligible for entry into an undergraduate degree course at Monash University Malaysia:

• Mathematics: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or equivalent Mathematics: GCE O level; Year 11 or equivalent.
• English: TOEFL 580 and TWE 5 or computer-based TOEFL score of 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) of 5; IELTS 6.0 with a score of at least 6 for each individual band; or GCE A level with a grade of C or above; English is the first language; English was the language of instruction in secondary and/or tertiary studies.

Monash South Africa

Students must hold one of the following to be eligible for entry into an undergraduate degree course at Monash South Africa:

• senior school certificate issued by the South African Certification Council (SAFCERT), certifying that the student has met the minimum entry requirements for university admission in South Africa, or
• a certificate issued by the Matriculation Board exempting the student from having to obtain SAFCERT certification, or
• an equivalent qualification (eg successful completion of the International Baccalaureate or A levels), or
• relevant post-secondary studies.

Students must also satisfy the following prerequisites to be eligible for entry into an undergraduate degree course at Monash South Africa:

• Mathematics: a satisfactory pass in mathematics in the South African Senior Certificate, or in an equivalent Year 12 level examination, is required.
• English: a pass in an examination equivalent to English at the higher grade (first or second language) in the South African Senior Certificate; or a pass in English at A level, O level, International Baccalaureate or equivalent; or TOEFL 550 and TWE 5; or computer-based TOEFL score of 213 with an Essay Rating (ER) of 5; or IELTS 6.0 with a score of at least 6 for each individual band.

Bachelors degrees

The diversity within the faculty is reflected in the range of undergraduate courses offered. Bachelors degrees that can be undertaken in the faculty are set out in Table 1.

Some similarities and differences exist in these bachelor courses. Guidance is frequently sought on course selection. The following information may be helpful.

Similarities between the bachelor degree courses

• All students are provided with the skills to understand and analyse the commercial environment and with experiences to enable them to embark on an interesting and productive career.
• All include a general multidisciplinary introduction to the course over the first and part of the second year and specialisations are available in one or two disciplines during the second and third years.
• All courses have a similar core of six compulsory units that will aid transfer between programs after one year.
• Selected students who achieve excellent results in their first three years of study have the opportunity to undertake an honours degree.
• Students in all courses are eligible for Monash University Business and Economics Scholarships and Monash Achievement Awards.

Differences between the bachelor degree courses

• The specialist discipline Bachelor of Business degrees offered at the Caulfield campus provide a general multidiscipline business base of compulsory units while also focusing on a particular specialisation or discipline area. Courses are structured in accordance with the requirements of the specialised discipline major.
• The generalist degrees, Bachelor of Business and Commerce, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics, provide a base of six compulsory units and allow students considerable flexibility in their choice of specialisation or discipline major. The courses provide a range of specific disciplines and a student's choice of specialisation may be made at the end of the first year of study. In the Bachelor of Economics one-third of the units can be electives and one of the two specialisations can be taken from any other faculty.
• The specialist Bachelor of Commerce degrees offered at Clayton allow more units to be studied within the specified discipline area, but otherwise allow the flexibility of final choice available in the generalist degree.
• While all seven campuses teach their courses in the on-campus study mode, some courses are also offered by off-campus learning and the Bachelor of Business Studies is offered through Open Learning Australia. Undergraduate students on the Berwick, Clayton, Peninsula and Monash Malaysia campuses are almost entirely school-leavers and graduates from the TAFE colleges with the majority studying full-time. The Caulfield campus enrolments include part-time students and the campus also offers evening classes. More than 70 per cent of the students enrolled at the Gippsland campus are studying by off-campus learning.

Double degrees

The double-degree programs offered by this faculty and by other faculties of the university are shown in Table 3. During the course of study a candidate may elect to continue studies for one degree only. In this event, the candidate shall discontinue studies for one degree and with the approval of the faculty board which administers the degree to be continued, he or she shall complete the course of study for the other degree in accordance with any conditions or requirements and within the time period specified and approved by that faculty board.
