Diploma in European Studies

Course code: 3755 + Clayton

Objectives

The Diploma in European Studies encourages students to acquire knowledge, not only of Europe, but of the present-day world in the context of a knowledge of Europe's cultural and intellectual formation, much of which has become part of the cultural and intellectual heritage of the globe. The course is addressed to students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including business and economics, law, medicine, the natural sciences and engineering no less than the humanities and social sciences. It aims to make students aware of the essential political, cultural, social and economic realities of today's Europe against the background of the evolution of European culture and ideas in modern times.

Entry requirements

Students must be enrolled in a bachelors degree either at Monash University or another university. Students in double-degree programs may also apply for admission to the diploma. Approval is required from the home faculty, faculties or university. Applications are made directly to the faculty, not via VTAC or Monash International.

Course structure

Students complete the equivalent of a major (48 credit points) in European studies. At first-year level, students take two prescribed units, EUR1100 (European culture and ideas: modernity and enlightenment) and EUR1200 (European culture and ideas: modernity and romanticism), followed by core units and electives at second and third-year level. Students admitted to the diploma negotiate a suitable program of study in consultation with the Centre for European Studies in the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics. For a full outline of the European studies major, see the `Areas of study' section on the Arts faculty website at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/.
