Teaching is a recognised and well-regarded career path for visual arts graduates. In addition to art education, graduates of the Visual Arts/Education program may practice professional in one or more art media, or may become involved in art gallery activities, cultural programs or a range of art and design industry activities.
When students take the Bachelor of Visual Arts degree and the Bachelor of
Education in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four years
of full-time study.
Graduates will be eligible for employment as teachers in Victoria. For
interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check with local
authorities. Opportunities also exist for further study.
To receive the award of Bachelor of Visual Arts and Bachelor of
Education, for the double degree, students must successfully complete units
totalling 192 credit points. These consist of:
(a) studies in visual arts (96 points), including a major study (at least 36
credit points must be taken in the chosen major study at year 2 and year 3
levels). Added to the 12 points obtained in year 1, this provides a core major
of 48 credit points)
(b) studies in education (96 points), a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Practicum placements are also included.
Candidates intending to qualify as secondary teachers need to be aware that
their major and minor studies in information technology must satisfy the
requirements for the study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A
and B sequence = method set) in their fourth year and the requirements for
employment laid down by the Victorian Department of Education and Training and
non-government authorities.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method in fourth year, a
candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that
discipline.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the
education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education,
including an extended teaching practicum. This practicum is a program of field
visits to different educational sites including structured teaching experience.
Students will be required to complete projects related to their field visits.
The visits are an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.
The Bachelor of Visual Arts/Bachelor of Education double-degree program commences at level 1 and is of four years duration. Entry is through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).
The course operates on-campus at Caulfield and either Clayton or Peninsula. Inter-campus travel is required. The course structure is set out in the handbook entry for the Faculty of Education.
