The Bachelor of Multimedia and Digital Arts is a broad-based degree appealing to students who wish to pursue studies in digital arts and multimedia practices. The course will be of particular interest to those seeking an art and design focus in multimedia.
Students will study a combination of multimedia and digital studio, as well as units in theory, drawing, professional practice and a choice of electives. In third year, students will have a choice of majoring in either multimedia design or digital arts.
This three-year, full-time degree is structured to provide the following areas of study.
This is the major study of the course and there are studios at each level. Units commence at a basic level of understanding and progress to a high level of competence in multimedia design. The knowledge gained in other parts of the course is progressively incorporated into the studio practice, developing problem-solving skills relevant to multimedia and digital arts. Assigned protects are approached within the context of the unique properties and opportunities of multimedia.
The multimedia and digital arts studio unit will combine lectures and participation in a group studio environment involving design activities both on paper and the computer.
These units will develop the basic concepts of information technology and introduce the hardware and software tools which are used in multimedia systems. They will also introduce the specialist hardware and software used in the development of multimedia products and systems.
Studies including drawing, typography, photomedia and digital imaging.
All students take three units on the theory, contextual and cultural aspects of art and design throughout the course.
All students take one professional practice unit at year three level.
Twenty-four credit points are available for elective studies, which are selected in consultation with the course coordinator. Units will generally be taken from those available within the Faculty of Art and Design, but units offered elsewhere in the university are also available. As well as the drawing and digital imaging electives, it is likely that many students may also wish to take photomedia and/or other studio studies.
Three years of full-time study. The expected number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48 (contact and non-contact). An 80 per cent attendance record for studios, lectures, seminars etc is required before a student may present for assessment in any unit. Exceptions will be subject to the approval of the course coordinator.
The course is offered through the VTAC system by ENTER. Completion of VCE units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any) and a study score of at least 30 in either Art or Studio Arts or Visual Communication and Design. No folio or interview is required (subject to number of places). For students who are without VCE or not eligible for a VCE score or mature-age, consideration will be given to other qualifications assessed as equivalent to the VCE plus a folio and interview.
Credit will be granted for equivalent studies completed elsewhere at approved institutions. Advanced standing in the course for students who have completed part of similar courses at Australian or international universities will be considered up to a maximum of two years and in accordance with other regulations of Monash University. Each application for credit or advanced standing will be considered on its own merits.
For students with Australian residency, this course falls within the lowest band of HECS liability. The fee for international students will be set by the vice-chancellor from time to time (currently $17,000 per annum).
