Structure of the course

The Bachelor of Creative Arts is a broad-based degree in the practice and theory of the creative arts. The course involves studies in a range of areas, which vary depending on the campus of enrolment. These areas are:

The course also provides students with a broad knowledge and understanding of the critical, cultural, socio-economic and management contexts of creative arts, design and media practices in contemporary discourse and society.

The following areas of study span the three-year Bachelor of Creative Arts

Creative arts theory (12 credit points)

These studies inform students about creative arts industries, organisations and participants and introduce them to aesthetic issues, organisational issues and critical writing about the creative arts.

Creative arts practice (minimum of 30 credit points or maximum of 48 credit points)

Practical studio units which either focus on a single studio discipline chosen from the range offered within the Faculty of Art and Design, or a broad-based program of two to four creative arts and media studies disciplines, selected from such areas as:

Creative arts project (12 credit points)

This project enables students to draw together the various strands of knowledge and skills attained within the course through the production of either a theory or studio project at third-year level

Contextual and cultural studies (minimum of 6 credit points or maximum of 12 credit points)

Units are selected from a range covering theoretical, contextual, critical, and cultural aspects of the creative arts and media.

Electives (minimum of 30 credit points or maximum of 48 credit points)

A range of elective units is available to support the interdisciplinary nature of the course and to allow students to pursue their individual interests. Electives may be chosen from within the Faculty of Art and Design, or from elsewhere in the university. Typical electives may include studio units such as painting, drawing, printmedia, sculpture or digital processes. Typical theory electives may include aesthetics, criticism, discourse in contemporary design, ornament, Asian and western art or cultural strategy. Students studying at the Gippsland campus can choose electives from the Faculty of Arts such as media studies, screen theory or creative writing.

Course length/workload required

Pass degree

Three years of full-time study. The expected average number of hours per week for a full-time student is 48 (contact and non-contact). An 80 per cent attendance record for studios, lectures, seminars etc is required before a student may present for assessment in any unit. Exceptions will be subject to the approval of the course coordinator.

Admission requirements

The course is offered through the VTAC system by ENTER. Completion of VCE units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 25 in English (any). No folio or interview is required. For applicants who are without VCE or not eligible for a VCE score or mature-age, consideration will be given to other qualifications assessed as equivalent to the VCE plus an interview.

Advanced standing

Credit will be granted for equivalent studies completed elsewhere at approved institutions. Advanced standing in the course for students who have completed part of similar courses at Australian or international universities will be considered up to a maximum of two years and in accordance with other regulations of Monash University. Each application for credit or advanced standing will be considered on its own merits.

Fee structure

For students with Australian residency, this course falls within the lowest band of HECS liability. The fee for international students will be set by the vice-chancellor from time to time.
